a long time ago, as in sometimes between 1700-1800, it was super fashionable in some circles to carry around a creepy tiny painting of the eye of your beloved (sometimes alive or deceased) fastened into an itty bitty bejewled pin. sometimes, it would also contain a lock of hair or some other weird momento mori shit. it was to be fastened on a lapel, close to the heart.
